Three version of World of Warcraft
1. Modern WoW (also known as Retail):
WoW Retail was launched in 2004 and is adding new content every few months. It's a modern take on the MMO genre and is the flagship of the company making these games. This subreddit doesn't deal with this version of the game.
2. Classic WoW
Classic WoW was launched in 2019, it explores the game as it was back in 2004. This subreddit is focusing on this version. The game is further divided in four subdivisions:
Classic Era - the game as it was in 2019-2021 (2004-2006), minimal changes.
Classic Era Hardcore - same as above, with the ruleset that your characters have 1 life.
Classic Wrath of the Lich King - the 'mainline' of Classic WoW, as the game was back in 2008-2010. This version of WoW will transition to 'Classic Cataclysm' (2010-2012) some time in the first part of 2024.
Classic Season of Discovery - an attempt to create something new out of a familiar and solved game. This version of Classic is releasing later today and it has the potential to take Classic WoW in a direction that was never explored (what if scenarios, adding cut and unfinished content, a casual take on rebalancing the game, etc.)
3. WoW Classic SoD
WoW Classic SoD is based on the Classic WoW content but with twists on a solved game. Season of Discovery is basically World of Warcraft (2004) Remake. Its essentially the same game that launched in 2004 but with new content and a lot of changes to classes and some quality of life changes.
The servers are completely fresh. Everyone will start at level 1. The level cap starts at level 25 and then will progress to 40, 50, and then finish at 60 where the endgame will start.
SoD's realms may or may not be temporary, it depends on its success. If all else fails, Blizzard has promised the characters will not be lost at the end of the 'season' but rather they will be transferred on a more permanent realm to be saved, so you definitely need more SOD Gold.
SoD is WoW's second season however unlike season 1 which had a clear beginning and end, SoD is very much unexplored territory for Blizzard. If the mode proves popular there is incentive for Blizzard to continue building on it rather than ending it. That said, as things stand right now, it is considered a 'season' (which with a wild estimate will run somewhere between 6 to 20 months) so for later seasons there's always the chance players will have to make new characters.
All in all, SoD is perfect for a new player coming into WoW!
